Witnessing the Black-Necked Cranes of Gangtey Valley

Every winter, the endangered black-necked cranes migrate from Tibet to the Phobjikha Valley in Bhutan, drawn by its wide glacial valley and protected wetlands.

Locals consider the cranes' arrival a sacred event, and the birds are said to circle Gangtey Monastery three times upon arrival and departure as a mark of respect. The annual Black-Necked Crane Festival celebrates their return with traditional dances and community gatherings.
