Punakha Dzong: The Palace of Great Happiness

Punakha Dzong is arguably Bhutan's most beautiful fortress-monastery, sitting majestically at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers.

Built in 1637, the dzong served as the capital and seat of government until 1955, and still hosts the winter residence of Bhutan's central monastic body. Its whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork and jacaranda trees make it one of the most photographed sites in the kingdom.

Crossing the cantilevered wooden bridge to reach the dzong is itself an experience, offering sweeping views of the surrounding rice terraces and river valley.
