The Ultimate Guide to Hiking Tiger's Nest Monastery

By Karma WangchukFebruary 8, 2026

The Tiger's Nest Monastery hike is one of Bhutan's most iconic experiences. Perched 3,120 meters above sea level on a cliff face, this sacred monastery is a spiritual and physical journey.

Preparation: The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours round trip. While it's not technically difficult, the altitude and steep sections require moderate fitness. Start with a light breakfast and bring plenty of water.

  • Comfortable hiking shoes (essential!)
  • 2-3 liters of water
  • Lightweight jacket
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Camera

The Hike: The trail ascends gradually through pine forests. At the halfway point, you'll reach a teahouse where you can rest and refuel. The final push involves steeper switchbacks, but the views become increasingly rewarding.

Special Moment: As you approach the monastery, you'll encounter the prayer flags and reach the viewpoint. The final section involves stone steps carved into the cliff itself — thrilling and breathtaking in equal measure.

Best Time to Visit: October to November and March to May offer the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures.

The monastery itself is a working place of worship, so dress modestly and respect the monks' space.
